What is the HERS® Index?

The HERS® Index Score is the homebuilding industry's standard by which to measure a home's energy efficiency. The lower the HERS® Index Score, the more energy efficient the home. Next to mortgage payments energy expenditures can represent the largest cost to homeowners. This rating provides invaluable information to prospective homeowners interested in making the most cost effective purchase decision and reducing their household's overall energy footprint.

The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS Index, while a home built to the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code scores a rating of 100.

This means a home with a HERS® Index score of 70 is 30% more energy efficient than the RESNET Reference Home, while a home with a HERS® Index Score of 130 is 30% less energy efficient than the RESNET Reference Home. Energy efficient features can lead to real savings by lowering your energy bill.
